  • Outdoor unit totally silent (no hum, no fan)
  • Breaker labeled “AC” or “Condenser” in the panel is tripped to the middle position

2. Thermostat or Control Settings

Every now and then, we walk into a home and find the thermostat set in a way the homeowner didn’t realize. For example, the fan is set to ON instead of AUTO, so the indoor fan runs continuously even when the AC isn’t actively cooling.

  • Fan blows all the time, even when temperature is satisfied

  • Locate your return air filter (often at the indoor unit or in a hallway grille).
  • Remove and inspect it; if it’s visibly dirty, replace it with the correct size and airflow direction.
