When Your Electrical Works…Except When It Doesn’t

We recently got a call from a homeowner — let’s call him Jason — who had a whole list of small but frustrating electrical issues around his house.

None of them were full-blown emergencies, but together they were a real headache:

  • A bedroom ceiling light that worked some days and stayed dark on others
  • An exterior outlet by the front door that was totally dead
  • A garage outlet used for car charging that randomly tripped about once a week
  • And he wanted a new outlet installed while we were there

As we walked through Jason’s concerns, we realized he was dealing with the same “sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t” problems we see in a lot of homes. So in this post, we’ll walk you through the same explanations and advice we shared with him.

Intermittent Ceiling Lights: Why That Fixture Works Sometimes

A ceiling light that works most of the time, but not always, can be tricky because it’s so inconsistent. With Jason, his light would come on one day, then the next day nothing happened when he flipped the switch.

Here are the most common causes we check first:

  • Loose bulb or bad socket connection – Over time, heat and vibration can loosen the base of the bulb or wear the metal contacts. The light might flicker or stay off until things “line up” just right again.
  • Worn-out light switch – The internal contacts in a switch can wear or arc, especially if it’s older. That can cause a light that works when you jiggle the switch or press it just right.
  • Loose wire connection in the box – At the fixture or switch, a wire nut may not be tight or a back-stabbed connection might be failing. As the wires expand and contract with temperature, the connection can come and go.
  • Overheated or poor-quality fixture – Some older fixtures just aren’t built for modern LED bulbs or higher wattages and can develop internal failures.

What you can safely check yourself

There are a couple of low-risk checks you can do before calling us:

  • Turn off the switch and snug the bulb (don’t overtighten). Try a brand-new bulb you know works.
  • Notice if the light responds when you gently wiggle the switch. If it crackles, feels loose, or works only at certain angles, it’s time to replace it.

If that doesn’t fix it — or if the light ever flickers, smells hot, or you see scorch marks — that’s a sign to stop troubleshooting and have us inspect the wiring and connections.

Dead Exterior Outlets: Often a Hidden GFCI Problem

Jason’s second issue was an exterior outlet by the front door that stopped working altogether. No power, no matter what he plugged in.

When an outside receptacle dies, our first suspicion is almost always a tripped GFCI. In many homes, several outdoor and bathroom outlets are protected by one GFCI device, which might be:

  • In a bathroom
  • In the garage
  • In the basement or laundry room
  • Or even as a GFCI breaker in the panel

How to track down and reset a tripped GFCI

When we talked Jason through it, here’s the same process we walked him through:

  1. Check all bathrooms and the garage for outlets with TEST and RESET buttons.
  2. If any GFCI outlet’s RESET button won’t stay in, unplug everything on that circuit and try again.
  3. If all GFCI receptacles look fine, check your main panel for a GFCI breaker (it will have a little TEST button on it). Flip it fully off, then back on.

If the outlet still has no power after that, we start looking for:

  • Loose or corroded connections in the weatherproof box
  • Damaged wiring from moisture, lawn equipment, or pests
  • Improperly tied-in add-on outlets from previous DIY work

Because exterior outlets are exposed to weather, we take them seriously. If you see rust, cracked covers, or water inside the box, it’s safer to let us handle it.

Garage & EV Outlets That Keep Tripping

Jason’s last electrical concern was in the garage: a standard outlet he used to charge his car would trip about once a week. Most of the time it was fine, but every so often he’d wake up to a car that hadn’t charged.

When a garage or EV outlet trips randomly, we look at three main things:

  • Overloaded circuit – A level 1 EV charger can draw a lot of current for hours. If that outlet shares a circuit with a freezer, tools, or heaters, you can easily exceed what the breaker or GFCI can handle.
  • GFCI nuisance tripping – EV chargers and long runs of wire can sometimes cause small leakage currents that annoy sensitive GFCI devices, especially older ones.
  • Loose or undersized wiring – If the wiring or terminations aren’t sized or tightened correctly, heat builds up and the breaker or GFCI does its job and trips.

What we recommend for EV and high-demand garage loads

With Jason, we planned to test the load while his charger was running and map out what else was on that circuit. For many homeowners, the long-term solution is:

  • Installing a dedicated circuit for EV charging or heavy garage loads
  • Upgrading to the correct breaker size and wire gauge per code
  • Ensuring proper GFCI protection that plays nicely with your charger

If your EV outlet trips more than occasionally, it’s a sign the system isn’t matched to your usage. We’d rather help you size it correctly than have you reset breakers every week.

When to Call Us vs. DIY

Some intermittent issues have simple fixes; others are warning signs. As a quick guide:

  • Safe to try yourself:
    • Replace bulbs and gently snug them
    • Reset GFCI outlets and breakers
    • Unplug devices to see if one thing is causing trips
  • Time to call us:
    • Lights or outlets feel hot, smell burnt, or show discoloration
    • Breakers or GFCIs trip frequently with normal use
    • Any crackling, buzzing, or sparking at switches or outlets
    • Exterior outlets show rust, water, or cracked covers
